In this phase, team members are concerned with clarifying what is expected of them in their specific roles and with understanding their team’s goals and primary tasks.
At this stage, the team members and leader together need to clarify assumptions they have about their roles, and their team’s objectives: often people misinterpret what is expected of them. Only by articulating their assumptions, can these misinterpretations then be addressed.
Our experience in Organizational Development over the years has shown that teams that struggle at this stage require assistance in clarifying their goals and roles to help them move forward and communicate more clearly.
The Role of the Leader

"The leader can shape and strengthen the collective learning process both directly and indirectly by fostering psychological safety, and in turn, setting goals."
