The Co-creating Psychological Safety in the Workplace project is comprised of the following sections:
What follows is a brief overview of each of these sections.
Section 1: Assessing Psychological Safety
This section offers two options on how you can assess the extent to which psychological safety is present (or absent) within a particular workplace, team or social environment. The two assessment tools highlight the key behaviours, qualities and unique stressors that block the realization of psychological safety.
Section 2: Drexler/Sibbet Team Performance Model
The structure of this resource has been organized around the framework of the Drexler/Sibbet Team Performance™ Model. The Team Performance Model describes the seven phases that groups and teams must navigate as they move predictably from the formative stages of group development toward high performance:
The Team Performance Model is based on the pioneering work of Jack Gibb, Allan Drexler, David Sibbet, Russ Forrester, Marvin Weisbord and Arthur M. Young.

At each stage of the seven stages of the model, you can click through a series of resources that follow this format:
RESOURCES
CAMH RESOURCES
These are resources available at CAMH that support or address the issues and challenges of the particular stage of the Team Performance™ Model.
Recommended textbooks
Sometimes all you want is a comprehensive text that will provide an overview and introduction to a particular stage of group development.
INTERNET RESOURCES
Here you will find a few key web sites to support your learning.
Journal articles and book chapters
This section is for those who want to research the topic in more depth or who have a more academic interest in the subject. Here you will find a current list of journal citations.
You can then click through a series of tools and interventions:
TOOLS AND INTERVENTIONS
This section introduces you to a selection of tools and interventions recommended for each stage of the Team Performance™ Model. (There are many tools and interventions to choose from.) Here we offer a modest cross-section of tools and interventions that we have used and found helpful. These tools and interventions are supported by the best practices literature, and address the goal of enhancing psychological safety.
There are two types of tools and interventions in this toolkit—those directed at the individual leaders with the goal of cultivating self-awareness and personal insight and growth for the individual and the other to apply when working with teams. Many of the individual tools are recommended for leaders, but anyone can benefit from using them.
Many of these interventions you can use by yourself. Some are as simple as reading a book or completing an on-line exercise, while others involve a more extensive time commitment and preparation, such as enrolling in a course or workshop. Some of the tools and interventions may require a facilitator or outside consultant.
Please let us know if there are tools and interventions that you recommend that you do not see in this toolkit. With your feedback, this toolkit can continue to be developed, and become increasingly useful to more and more individuals and teams!
Section 3: Additional Resources
This section lists resources under four main headings: an anti-oppression framework, bullying, emotional intelligence and interprofessional education. While these topics did not fit under the seven stages of the team performance model, they are all crucial areas to consider when assessing and supporting psychological safety.
Section 4: Evaluation Strategies
In this section, we have provided a short summary of the evaluation efforts that have been conducted in this area with some recommendations for future research.
